Why Your Gum Health Matters

Happy National Gum Care Month from all of us at Willow Lake Orthodontics! In honor of the special occasion, this blog will highlight the importance of healthy gums, how you can maintain optimal gum health, and why this all matters. Let's start with the basics.

Why is gum health important?

Your gums and underlying bones are the foundation of your oral health. And even though straight teeth and a beautiful smile are important, those require the stability of healthy gums and bone.

How can I properly care for my gums?

Taking care of your gum health requires a consistent dental routine. That includes brushing your teeth at least twice per day, flossing once per day, and visiting the dentist every 6 months for a check-up and cleaning.

Now that we've got the basics out of the way, we'll go over what happens if you neglect your gum health.

By not maintaining good oral health habits, you may experience gum disease. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can look like puffy gums or bleeding during brushing or flossing. When left untreated, gum disease can lead to gum recession and bone loss, which can further lead to surgeries or even tooth loss.

If you or someone you know suspects having gum disease, we recommend visiting the dentist or periodontist for a thorough evaluation and treatment plan. Additionally, they should focus on their at-home dental habits in order to immediately begin improving their oral health.
